The Inner West is one of Sydney's oldest residential belts — narrow Victorian terraces, semis and workers' cottages packed onto clay-shale, the vast majority built in the 1800s and early 1900s before damp-proof courses were standard. Where a course exists it has usually broken down, clay holds water against the footings, and shared party walls and rendered facades trap moisture. Rising damp and salt-affected lower walls are common right across the area.

The lasting fix is never a render-and-paint that seals the damp in. We diagnose the true source, install a new damp-proof course where the wall needs it, and finish with a breathable, salt-resistant render so the old masonry keeps drying.

The Inner West's Victorian terraces sit on clay-shale with failed or absent damp-proof courses, so ground moisture wicks up through party walls and old brick. It carries salt to the surface, blistering paint, blowing plaster and rotting skirtings — and because terraces share walls, untreated damp can migrate between homes and into the structural masonry, the costliest damage to undo.
